Hey Reader! Winter may seem like a quiet time for a flower farm, but behind the scenes, thereâs plenty happening at My Daughterâs Flower Patch! While most of the field rests for the winter, weâre busy tending to a select handful of fall planted flowers in preparation for spring. One of our biggest winter tasks is caring for our ranunculus and anemones, which are tucked safely inside our high tunnel. On sunny days, we open the tunnel to let in fresh air and prevent overheating, then close it up tight when temperatures drop to keep the flowers cozy. This careful temperature regulation helps ensure strong, healthy blooms when spring arrives! Outside the tunnel, many hardy annuals are overwintering in the fields, patiently waiting for warmer days. These plants, including snapdragons, bachelor buttons and feverfew, are resilient to the cold but still need some attention. We keep them protected with frost cloth and monitor them closely to ensure theyâre safe from harsh weather. Itâs a slow but essential process that helps us bring you the earliest blooms possible. Meanwhile, inside the warmth of our seed-starting area, weâve kicked off our 2025 season! This month, we began sowing seeds using a method called soil blocking. Instead of traditional plastic trays, we create small, compact blocks of soil that serve as the perfect environment for germinating seeds. Soil blocking has several benefits: Watching these tiny seeds sprout and grow is a wonderful reminder that spring is on its way, even when frost still lingers outside! Weâre so excited for whatâs ahead and canât wait to share more with you in the coming months. Thank you for being part of our flower-loving community!
